Kindercampus

Meierij Site Van Meyel

INTERNSHIP
2022 / timeframe – 6 months
Team: Mechthild Stuhlmacher, Ewout de Bleser, Max Koenraad

The assignment was given by the municipality in Brussels. The current school is characterised by cramped buildings and pavilions scattered across the site without coherence. The municipality wishes to renovate part of the buildings to increase the capacity of the school while ensuring the clarity and proper functioning of the site. Our team also had to develop a strategy for the interventions at this site, which will remain partially in use during the works.

For the Kindercampus Meierij van Meyel competition, our design envisioned the school as a small-scale campus with a series of detached buildings interspersed with expansive green spaces, each with its own distinct identity and function. The proposal reimagined the former estate as a dynamic, modern learning environment that prioritizes sustainability, nature, and inspiration. The buildings with classrooms, the library, the cafeteria, and the sports hall are designed as independent structures, each with unique spatial qualities.

Our design placed a strong emphasis on the outdoor areas, treating them as integral to the daily life of the school. The site is envisioned as more than just a school as it also provides a market square, a community center, a playground, and nature spaces in the neighbourhood. This creates a versatile, engaging environment that extends beyond the school itself.
